POSTCARD FROM RENO

Friday, June 22, 2007

Greetings from the biggest little city! It's a dry 80 degrees at 10:00
p.m. I'm right now sitting in a Duds and Suds while we are waiting for
four loads of choir t-shirts to finish. We have had another fun
day....and the kids are swimming in the hotel pool to wind down (may not
be possible for 26 kids to wind down together in the pool, but maybe the
chlorine will make their eyes tired!).

Our new friends from Christ United Methodist Church brought the spoiled
kids (they were treated pretty royally!) to the bus this morning, we
said our good byes and headed to downtown Salt Lake City to Temple
Square. Off the bus, into the South Visitor Center, and onto a tour of
the grounds. We had a tour guide from Japan and one from Hawaii. They
even sang for US in the Tabernacle Choir hall, and then later invited
our kids to sing with a great acoustic sound.

Next onto the bus and just outside of Salt Lake City we came to the
Great Salt Lake. We pulled off at a scenic view site and could
immediately smell the ucky scent of a salt water backwash. A while
later on I-80 the salt flats started to appear. People would write
messages in rocks on the side of the flats next to the road. Our lunch
stop was on the edge of the salt flats and the kids got to go out into
the salty area. From the "shore" it appeared that they were on a frozen
lake it was so white and bright! The salty top was sticky, clumpy sand,
so the foot wash was nice to have available before they trekked it all
onto the bus.

Then on the road for our 500 miles to Reno. It was a long day, and poor
Captain Jim must have sore forearms holding the bus straight on the road
with the strong winds that blew most of the whole way. We had a 4 movie
day plus watched the DVD from last night's concert in Salt Lake City
that Larry made for us. Into Reno we pulled up to the Red Robin where
we had called ahead and had a fantastic time eating and even had the
staff share Mary Kate's birthday a few days ahead - might as well get
that free sundae!

We were only a few blocks from our hotel where we checked in, gathered
up the shirts for laundering, and kids hit the pool! Lights out at
11:00 tonight and we'll be on the road again in a few hours!
